The big fire in Southern California 〜南カリフォルニアでの大きな山火事〜

Mommy: "Mmm? Deer in the vineyard in winter. That's unusual."

ママ：「ん？冬のぶどう園にシカ？珍しいわね。」

Last Sunday, my husband and I went to San Luis Obispo. Right after we left our town, we noticed the hazy sky and the weird color of the sun. These were caused by the big smoke from the Thomas fire in Southern California.

先週の日曜日、主人と私はサンルイズオビズポへ行きました。私たちの町を出てすぐ、かすんだ空とおかしな色の太陽に気づきました。これらは、南カリフォルニアで発生した山火事、トーマスファイヤーが原因でした。

Our black car showed the ash from the fire clearly. Santa Barbara county decided to hand out the mask for people to wear, so that they can avoid the air pollution. This made us think that we should prepare an emergency bag and how we should protect all our animals in the field.

私たちの黒い車には、山火事からの灰がはっきりを姿を見せていました。サンタバーバラ郡では、人々が装着できるようにマスクを配ることを決めました。大気汚染の被害を避けるためです。このことは、私たちに「緊急バッグを用意しなきゃ。」と思わせ、我が家の動物たちをどうやって守ればいいのか考えさせられました。

The Thomas fire burned over 250,000 acres, and it became fourth largest fire in California history. And the fire is still going on. Yesterday, we heard that one fire fighter was involved and killed by the fire. What sad news...  

トーマスファイヤーは、250,000エーカーもの土地を焼け尽くし、カリフォルニア史上、４番目に大きな火事となりました。そしてその火事は、いまだに続いています。昨日、消防士が火事に巻き込まれて亡くなったと聞きました。なんて悲しいニュースなんでしょう‥‥

There were multiple reasons why the Thomas fire grew this big. But the news said that an illegal cooking fire at a homeless encampment was determined to be the cause. As the website of the local fire station said a few years ago, 90% of wild fires are caused by humans.

トーマスファイヤーがこんなに大きくなったのには、いくつか理由がありますが、もともとの原因は、ホームレスの生活場所で違法に起こされた料理用の火だったことが判明しました。数年前に地元の消防署のウェブサイトで発表されたように、山火事の90パーセントは、人間によって起こされたものなのです。

Kona: "And the strong wind is another reason that the fire is still growing, I heard."

コナ：「そして強風が、火事がまだ大きく広がっている理由のひとつなんだって。」

Ehime: "No wonder deer are in the vineyard. They have nowhere to go."

えひめ：「どおりで、ぶどう園にシカしゃんがいるはずでしゅよ。行き場がないんでしゅから。」

Ehime: "If the fire grows near us, where should we go?"

えひめ：「もし火事がわたちたちの近くで発生ちたら、わたちたちは、どこに行けばいいんでしゅか？」

Kona: "I guess we would evacuate with daddy and mommy. That's what we we did in Hawaii when a Tsunami was going to hit us."

コナ：「パパやママと一緒に、避難するんだと思うよ。ハワイで津波に襲われそうになったとき、そうしたから。」

Ehime: "Can cows, chickens and a horse get in the car with us?"

えひめ：「牛しゃん、にわとりしゃん、馬しゃんも、私たちと一緒に車に乗るでしゅか？」

Kona: "That.... I don't know."

コナ：「それは‥‥　わからないな。」
