Our decision 〜

In September 2014, my husband and I became owners of this vineyard. Grape growing for wine was my husband's dream for a long time, and we finally made his dream come true together.

In 2015, my husband got on a tractor and did weeding, fertilizing and lots of other work. I brought some drinks, refreshment and food to my husband & his workers in the vineyard.

Kona: "I did some cleaning, like picking up branches in the vineyard."

Kahlua: "I barked and chased after birds, so I protected our kingdom."

Ehime: "I did.... Umm... Well... I ran around the vineyard♪"

Thanks to everyone's effort, we had great quality of grapes in the fall 2015, and had a wonderful harvest day.

We were very happy to see all the beautiful grapes in the bin, but there was one negative thing. That was a quantity of grapes. The weather in May was cold, and the fruit didn't grow big. The amount of grapes that we harvested didn't cover all the costs we spent.

In 2016, the vines and grapes have been growing much better than the ones in 2015. My husband and I have been very excited about our vineyard. Of corse, our dogs are excited, too.

Kona: "Aaaaan."

Ehime: "Aaaaan."

Kahlua: "Both of you didn't get it."

This year, one wish occurred to our heart, and it was becoming bigger and bigger day by day.

That is... making our own wine and sell it as a winery.

Recently, we had a chance to taste the neighbor's wine made of the grapes from 2015. This Zinfandel was the one my husband harvested with our neighbor by hand. I remember that I brought some refreshments and made lunch for them at that time. The wine was still young, but you can easily tell that this is going to be the very tasty wine in the future.

To become a winery, we need to get permits from the county, state and country, purchase the barrels, bottles, corks and some various things, hire the designer to make labels, and have contracts with some people. Our budget is limited since our first harvest in 2015 didn't make a profit.

Kahlua: "I know our daddy and mommy very well."

Kona: "Me, too. They are going to do it."

Ehime: "I guess I can help you weed."

My husband and I have been collecting the information about permits we are thinking to apply and having meetings with the winemaker who is planning to work for us. And we made a decision. We are becoming a winery!

Cheer: "What!? Really?"

Happy: "I still want to eat hay. Please don't use up all the money."

Kona: "Are we going to be mascot dogs in Kula Vineyards? (smile)"

Kahlua: "I need more grooming."

We wake up every morning and think how we can manage our business as a winery. Becoming a winery is a big change for us. But one thing we really don't want to change is the quality our grapes. We, including our workers have been putting our effort and passion into our grapes, and we don't want to change it a bit in the future.

Last weekend, we purchased the bins to put grapes in at the harvest. Providing those bins to workers who help us to pick grapes is a winery's responsibility.

The new vines that were planted in our vineyard this year are growing well. They might produce some amount of grapes next year.

Daddy: "We want to grow with you, vineyard. Can you corporate with us?"

Is this the zoo in the nature? 〜

Mommy: "Oh, my gosh! Those ladies are walking their horses just like we walk our dogs!"

Ladies: "Hello♪"

Snicker (Horse on the right): "Who are they?"

Bob (Horse on the left): "Im not sure, but why don't you show them your trick?"

Snicker: "Should I?"

Snicker: "My nose, open!"

Bob: "Fu fu fu. Good job♪"

Snicker: "Did they enjoy it?"

Bob: "I'm not sure about them, but I did♪"

Kahlua: "What big Shelties they are..."

Kona: "They are horses, aren't they?"

Ehime: "Their muzzle looked like brother Kahlua's."

Kona: "Horses are taking a walk just like we do. It's a beautiful morning♪"

Kahlua: "Are you sure they are not Shelties?"

Ehime: "Mommy. Someone is walking toward us."

The lady said she lives in this neighborhood. Do you remember we were talking about one big bird last week and wondering if she is an ostrich or an emu? Today, this lady told us that the big bird we were always thinking an ostrich is actually an emu.

Daddy: "I thought the bird might be an emu. Let's go see."

Kona: "OK, let's go♪"

Daddy: "Yeah, she is an emu."

Mommy: "She is beautiful. Let me take photos of her."

Kona: "Watch out, mommy."

Ehime: "That lady said that the emu might bite you."

Daddy: "Now, let's go home. Can't you get in the car by yourself yet, Ehime?"

Ehime: "I'm caring about you so much, so I want to give you some exercise."

Daddy: "Look. Our neighbor alpacas seem to be doing well."

Mommy: "Oh! A big bird is flying!"

Daddy: "That's a hawk. He is trying to get gophers or ground squirrels."

Ehime: "Mr. Hawk. Gophers & ground squirrels said night-night."

Mommy: "When did you talk with them?"

At home おうち

Chicken A: "Hey, girls! Don't steal my treats!"

Have an amazing Monday♪

Mommy: "Today, I'm thinking to add some prosciutto and arugula as toppings. We have picked veggies as a side dish."

Daddy: "Let's have some watermelon that was harvested in our garden, too."
