Do wild cats attack chickens? 〜野良猫はにわとりを襲う？〜

After taking care of Jersey cows, I let the chickens out to play outside for a while and clean the chicken coop every morning. I did the same this morning. While chickens were pecking the ground and having a good time, I was standing near them and writing work e-mail on my phone. When I looked around, I noticed this wild cat was about one meter away from chickens!

ジャージー牛たちのお世話のあと、私は毎朝にわとりたちを遊ばせるためにしばらくお外に出し、にわとり小屋を掃除します。今朝も同じことをしました。にわとりたちが地面をツンツンして楽しんでいる間、私はそばに立ち、ケイタイで仕事のメールを書いていました。ふと見渡したとき、この野良猫がにわとりたちから約１メートルのところにいることに気づいたのです！

The cat was aiming at chickens obviously (at least that was what I saw), so I said "No!" and ran to the cat. He/she ran away quickly. I didn't think that the cats attack chickens to eat, but do they do that when they are hungry? 

そのネコは、明らかににわとりたちを狙っていました（少なくても、私はそれを見ました）。なので「ダメッ！」と行って、ネコに走り寄りました。ネコは、急いで逃げて行きました。私は勝手に、ネコは食べるためににわとりを襲ったりしないと思っていたのですが、おなかがすくと、襲ってしまうものなのでしょうか？ 

Chicken A: "Were we in danger?"

にわとりA：「私たち、危なかった？」

Chicken B: "I didn't notice the cat came closer. He came very quietly."

にわとりb：「ネコが近寄ってきたことに気づかなかった。とっても静かに来たんだもの。」

Makana: "I don't know much about cats. We've never lived with them."

マカナ：「ぼくは、あんまりネコのことわからない。一緒に暮らしたことないもん。」

Sachi: "I don't mind playing with cats and chickens."

さち：「わたちは、ネコしゃんともにわとりしゃんとも遊んでもいいよ。」
