Why do you have chickens? 〜どうしてにわとりを飼うの？〜

Ehime: "Chickens have been living on our property since we moved in this house, right? Although, some of them are gone."

えひめ：「にわとりしゃんたちって、わたちたちがこの家にお引越しちてきてから、ずっとうちの敷地内に住んでいましゅよね？　何羽かはもういなくなっちゃったけど。」

Makana: "What!? Did you eat them?"

マカナ：「えっ！？　食べちゃったの？」

Ehime: "They don't eat their own chickens, right?"

えひめ：「うちのにわとりしゃんたちのことは、食べないでしゅよね？」

Mommy: "No. I know some people see these live animals only for the meat, but daddy & I don't want to eat our animals. Chickens are here for eggs, not for meat."

ママ：「食べないよ。こういう家畜動物を食肉用としか見ない人たちがいることは知ってるけれど、パパとママは、自分たちの動物を食べたいとは思わないの。にわとりさんたちは、卵のためにここにいるのよ。食肉用じゃなくって。」

Mommy: "It's probably hard to understand how adorable they are until you actually take care of chickens. But they peck and eat the bugs around the house as well, and that's very helpful if you don't like to see the bugs inside of your house. Also, once you name them, you  really feel like they are your family members."

ママ：「多分、実際にお世話をするまでは、にわとりさんたちがどれだけかわいいかっていうことを理解するのは難しいかもしれないんだけれどね。にわとりさんって、ツンツンして家のまわりの虫を食べてくれたりするの。家の中に虫を見たくない人には、とってもありがたいことなのよ。それに、名前をつけたらもうそれは、家族っていう気持ちになっちゃうもの。」

Makana: "But, I was eating the dog food that contains the chicken meat until we figured out I have the sensitive stomach for it."

 マカナ：「でもぼく、鶏肉を食べるとおなかをこわすってわかるまで、鶏肉が入ったドッグフードを食べてたけど。」

Ehime: "And we are eating the biscuit that contains a little amount of chicken from time to time. That's a practice for your stomach."

えひめ：「しょれに、わたちたち、ときどき少量の鶏肉が入ったビスケットを食べてるんでしゅよ。マーくんのおなかの練習でしゅから。」

Makana: "What!? I don't want to eat our family members."

マカナ：「えっ！？　ぼく、家族を食べたくないよお。」

Mommy: "We don't eat our family members, even though we eat the chicken meat. This part is hard to accept for many people. But in my opinion, once you believe that these chickens are your family members, and their job is laying eggs, you should stick with your belief. That way, they can live to the end by getting your affection. That's what daddy & mommy want for our chickens here and that's how we can be happy."

ママ：「鶏肉は食べても、家族は食べないわよ。この部分は、たくさんの人たちにとって受け入れがたいところではあるわよね。でもママの意見では、一度”このにわとりさんたちは自分の家族。この子たちの仕事は卵を産むこと。”と信じたら、その信念をずっと持ち続けるといいんじゃないかな。そうすれば、にわとりさんたちは、最後まで愛情を受けながら生きられるんだもの。それが、パパとママがうちのにわとりさんたちに望むことだし、ママたちが幸せだって感じることだしね。」

Makana: "I see. Then, I wonder what my job is."

マカナ：「そっか。じゃあ、ぼくの仕事ってなんだろうな。」

Ehime: "I believe your job is barking at the birds in the vineyard. That's what brother Kahlua used to do."

えひめ：「マーくんのお仕事は、ぶどう園の鳥に向かってワンワン吠えることじゃないでしゅかね。カルアにいも、よくやってまちたよ。」
