On a very foggy & chilly morning, our last harvest of the season started. This turned out to be the largest amount of grape-harvesting since we purchased this vineyard. Great job, our Syrah!
とても霧が深くて寒い朝、今シーズン、最後の収穫が始まりました。今回は、このぶどう園を購入してから最多のぶどうの収穫となりました。えらいぞ、私たちのシラー！
Grapes can be harvested only in fall. In January or February, they get pruned. We disc the vineyard and weed early spring. When the vines started to grow leaves, we clean the vines. When we see the tiny green grapes start to grow, that's so exciting. More cleaning the vines, dropping some fruit to let other to grow, netting, checking the Brix. Everything we do is for this harvesting.
ぶどうは、秋にだけ収穫されます。1月や2月には、枝の剪定をします。春先には、ぶどう園を耕して草刈り。ぶどうの木が葉っぱをつけ始めると、ぶどうの木をきれいにする作業。小さな緑のぶどうが育ち始めるのを見る時は、本当にワクワクします。ぶどうの木をさらにきれいにし、他のぶどうを育たせるためにいくつかのぶどうを切り落とし、ネットを張り、糖度のチェックをして。私たちのするすべてのことは、この収穫のためです。
Grape growing is dealing with Mother Nature. You never know if the year will be a successful one or not. Last year, our grapes had heat damage, and it was very difficult for us to see the grapes were suffering. But this year, we had a lot of amazing grapes grow. Look how beautiful they are!
ぶどう栽培は、母なる自然と向き合うことです。その年が成功の年となるかどうかは、誰にもわかりません。昨年私たちのぶどうは、熱波のダメージを受けました。ぶどうが苦しんでいる姿を見るのは、私たちにはとても辛いことでした。でも今年、たくさんの素晴らしいぶどうが育ってくれました。見てください、このきれいなぶどうたち！
Our grapes are all hand-harvested. We don't use the machine. Everyone holds the clippers and goes through the vines. This is much harder you can imagine. I can tell, because I harvested for long hours in 92F last year!
私たちのぶどうは、すべて手作業で収穫されます。収穫用の機械は使いません。みんな手バサミを持ち、ぶどうの木をひとつずつ見て行きます。これは、想像するよりはるかに大変な仕事です。これを言えるのは、私も昨年34度の気温の中、長時間収穫をしたからです。
Worker 1: "Look, she is taking photos of us."
作業員さん１：「見て。あの人がぼくたちの写真を撮ってるよ。」
Worker 2: "Say, cheese♪"
作業員さん２：「はい、チーズ♪」
Everyone: "Ahaha!"
みんな：「あはは！」
We love vineyard workers! During the hard work, they are trying to have a good time.
私たちは、ぶどう園の作業員さんたちが大好きです！大変な仕事の中、みんななんとか楽しもうとしています。
Worker 3: "I'm trying to get rid of as many leaves as possible here."
作業員さん３：「ここで、できるだけたくさんの葉っぱを取り除こうとしているんです。」
Mommy: "That's great."
ママ：「それはいいわね。」
Kahlua: "Bow-wow! Bow-wow! I just get excited to see so many people!"
カルア：「ワンワン、ワンワン！たくさんの人を見ると、ワクワクする〜！」
Kona: "Kahlua looks very healthy now."
コナ：「カルアくん、今はとっても健康そうだね。」
Mommy: "Tractors are moving down the hill. I'm going to take chickens out now."
ママ：「トラクターが丘を降りて行くわ。そろそろにわとりさんたちを、お外に出そうっと。」
Day: "It was so noisy this morning."
デイ：「今朝は本当に、騒がしかったわね〜」
Holi: "I'm glad we can finally get out from the coop."
ホリ：「ようやくにわとり小屋から出られて、よかったわ。」
Ehime: "Open Sesame!"
えひめ：「ひらけ〜、ゴマ！」
Kona: "Isn't this door, not the sesame?"
コナ：「これ、ゴマじゃなくて、ドアじゃない？」
Kahlua: "Whichever is fine. I'm so tired from barking. Please get me in the house."
カルア：「どっちでもいいよ。ぼくはワンワン鳴いて、もう疲れちゃった。おうちに入らせて。」
